Armenia is an ancient country with two accomplishments that give its people a sense of genuine pride. One is the Armenian alphabet, invented by Mesrop Mashtots in AD 405, and the other is Ararat cognac, first distilled by the Yerevan Brandy Company in 1887. From the very beginning Ararat made an impressive impression on drinkers, and at the start of the twentieth century, it was entered in several French cognac competitions, including at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition, where it wowed the French judges with its exceptional quality and rich, smooth flavour and won its very special privilege of the cognac label, a privilege revoked after the Great War. Nevertheless, it persisted through Armenia's years under Soviet rule, as the palatial Ararat distillery was constructed in Yerevan and won several prominent fans, including Sir Winston Churchill.
